Primate Brain Bank

The Primate Brain Bank (PBB) is a non-profit organization with a collection containing high quality brain tissue ranging from proto-primates and old and new world monkeys to the great apes and provides this to researchers for the purpose of scientific research.

The tissue is obtained from zoo animals and animals from primate centers that died of natural causes, accidents or through euthanasia. No animals are killed for the sole purpose of collecting brain material for the PBB.

The PBB contributes to a reduction in the use of laboratory animals by collecting deceased primates and preserving their brains for biomedical research purposes. In addition, the knowledge gained by the study of primate brain material will benefit the health, well-being, and conservation of primates in captivity and in the wild.

Newsflash

NEW SPECIES - In 2011 the PBB acquired the brains of a Macaca fascicularis, which was sectioned and snap frozen and is stored at -80° C. In addition we acquired 33 brains from Macaca arctoides and fascicularis, which were perfused and stored in formaline. SEE THE UPDATED DATABASE for details.

LOWER REIMBURSEMENT - The PBB participates in the EUPRIM project, as a subcontractor of the BPRC, Rijswijk, NL. This implies that the PBB can apply for grants when material is being disseminated to research institutions in the EU and affiliated countries. When granted the PBB can supply the material at substantially reduced costs!!!
